Allan Corfield Architects. Meet the team – Callum
Our ‘meet the team’ series focuses on our company and the people who make it great! We know that entrusting someone with the task of building your dream home is a very difficult decision to make. Therefore, we believe that you should get to know each of us and find out what makes us tick! Our reputation for great service is due, not only to our qualifications and experience – but our passion.
Today you will find out more about Callum, our new technologist who joined our team last year.
Callum started his Architectural Technology education at Fife College in Glenrothes where he completed a 2-year HND course in Architectural Technology. With this qualification he was able to move directly into the 2nd year of the BSc(Hons) Architectural Technology course at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen where he spent the next 3 years.
During his time at university, Callum took part in the Erasmus Exchange Programme where he studied for 6 months in Amsterdam at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam.
After graduating from Robert Gordon University, he worked for Fouin+Bell Architects within the commercial banking team which saw him work on projects from all over the UK and gain plenty of valuable experience from site visits to dealing with local planning authorities.

What inspired you to pursue a career in architecture?
The ability to have a career in a design-based industry. At school, Graphic Communication and Art and Design were my two favourite subjects, and the architecture industry gave me a way to turn those interests into a career.
Why did you want to work at ACA?
When I saw the vacancy at ACA it immediately stood out to me because of the chance to receive on the job training which at an early stage of my career was something that was very appealing to me. Also, the chance to work on residential projects where previously I had worked within the commercial sector was a welcome change.

What, in your opinion is ACA’s strengths as an architectural practice?
The unique designs that they create. No job is ever the same and every client gets exactly what they are looking for in their design. The friendly environment within the office is another big strength, especially for me being a new member of the team, it makes it so much easier to work at your best when everyone is so friendly and welcoming.
Do you enjoy designing residential one-off homes? What do you like about Self Build?
I very much enjoy designing one-off residential homes because there is so much room for creativity within a one-off design. What I like about self-build is that no two projects will ever be the same because every build is tailored exactly to the client’s needs and wants.
If you weren’t working in architecture, what would you be doing?
Probably a video game designer/tester, being paid to play video games sounds like a pretty fun life to me!
Do you pursue your architectural interests when you are not at work in any way?
As my partner is also an Architectural Technologist, we are constantly talking about architecture, we enjoy watching the many television shows about house design and we recently created a 3D model of our flat so that we could redesign it the way we like.

Tell us something about what you do in your spare time?
More often than not I spend my spare time playing video games whether that be online with friends or playing a story-based game with my partner.
I’m a big fan of football, when I can I like to cheer on my team of choice Manchester United. I also try to play 5-a-side football as often as I can to keep fit.
My partner and I also like to travel whether that be seeing the many sights Scotland has to offer or travelling abroad and ticking off countries from the long list of places we’d like to visit.
