Allan Corfield Architects. Meet the team – Laura
Our ‘meet the team’ series focuses on our company and the people who make it great! We know that entrusting someone with the task of building your dream home is a very difficult decision to make. Therefore, we believe that you should get to know each of us and find out what makes us tick! Our reputation for great service is due, not only to our qualifications and experience – but our passion.
Today you will find out more about Laura, our Architectural Technologist.
Following a varied career from hairdressing to optometrists, Laura returned to further education in 2014. Having always had a passion for interiors and architecture, she studied HND Interior design at Fife College. From there, she continued on to Heriot Watt University, where she graduated with a Master’s degree in Interior Architecture in 2019.
Since graduating, Laura worked freelance on various new build and extension designs to planning stage and completed a course on PassivHaus construction and retrofit. Laura is passionate about sustainable and biophilic design and creating healthier environments and have a real interest in the adaptive re-use of buildings and preserving our vernacular architecture.
Laura is now looking forward to building on her existing knowledge and skill set as a Graduate Technologist here at ACA.
I understand that Architecture was not your first profession, and you previously worked as a carer. Could you tell us a bit about why you decided to change to a career in architecture?
When I was younger, almost every weekend as a family, we would visit a castle, and even then, I loved all the different architecture and interior styles and would sketch many of them. I was always very creative, making things, painting etc. I applied and got into Edinburgh Uni to do fashion design when I left school, but due to family circumstances, I didn’t go.
Following a varied career, then 15 years as a support worker, I decided to return to further education and initially studied interior design but did my master’s degree in interior architecture. I loved the course and learning new skills in 3D software and more about building theory and space planning with lots of varied design projects.
Quick summary of your career up until you joined ACA (studies, projects, placements, jobs)
Unfortunately, right after I graduated, COVID struck. I managed to get work as a freelancer designing holiday lodges, extensions and a few commercial projects.
Still, I wanted to get a job within a practice to expand my skill set and knowledge and learn the various processes involved within a working practice. I attended night classes to learn more software and also a Passivehaus course which is a real interest of mine.
Why did you want to work at ACA?
I have been following (you could say stalking, lol) the practice on social media for years, and they have always stood out for their unique one-off designs and their practice of sustainable and Passivehaus designs.
What, in your opinion, are ACA’s strengths as an architectural practice?
They are experts in sustainable self-build homes and are very client-focused, providing bespoke designs specifically tailored to the client. They have an excellent, highly skilled team with a wealth of knowledge who are all so friendly and always willing to help.
Do you like working in designing one-off residential homes? What do you like about Self Build?
Yes, it’s great. Again, as each project is unique, the work is varied, and providing a client with their dream home that works specifically for their family’s needs is very rewarding.
Do you pursue your architectural interests when you are not at work in any way?
Yes, just like when I was young, I now take my boys visiting various castles, which they really enjoy.
I am subscribed to various architectural and interior magazines and like to keep up-to-date with new trends and technologies and have also done a few CPD courses for Passivhaus, sustainable home building and have attended a few homebuilding exhibitions.
Tell us something about what you do when you are not at work. What do you do in your free time?
Ha, free time, what’s that?! If I get the time, I enjoy visiting museums and art galleries or just chilling with a good book.
I enjoy decorating (much to my husband’s frustration) and upcycling furniture.
As a family, we like going for long drives and walks and exploring our beautiful country and are avid movie fans.
