Replacement Dwelling in Beardsen
Replacement Dwelling in Beardsen
This project involves the demolition of a dilapidated existing house and the design of a contemporary replacement dwelling in Bearsden.
The brief focused on creating a highly energy-efficient family home, designed using fabric-first principles and informed by Passive House methodology.
Set on a sloping, wooded site, the proposal maximises the natural topography by incorporating a basement level to accommodate home offices and workshop space, while the main living accommodation sits above, oriented to capture light and views.
The new home is arranged to provide three bedrooms and carefully planned, functional living spaces tailored to the clients’ day-to-day requirements.
A winter garden is integrated into the design to provide a sheltered transitional space that enhances the connection between indoors and outdoors throughout the year. A detached garage is positioned to complement the main dwelling and complete the overall site composition.
The construction strategy explores modern methods of construction, with consideration given to ICF and advanced timber frame systems, ensuring a robust, thermally efficient building envelope. Detailed energy modelling through SAP and PHPP informs the design development, allowing predicted heating demand and running costs to be accurately assessed from an early stage.
The resulting scheme transforms a challenging site into a contemporary, low-energy home—carefully designed to reflect the clients’ ambition to self-manage their build while delivering a cost-effective, high-performance family house tailored to modern living.
